Kollavarsham, star-day birthdays, njattuvela farming time — and the province that settled the ancestors-versus-sky argument in the fifteenth century.
Most Indian calendars name their months after nakshatras of full moons (Chaitra, Vaisakha…) or inherit Sanskrit month-names through lunar reckoning. Kerala does something more austere and, computationally, more beautiful: its month is the Sun's rasi. The Malayalam month of Chingam is precisely the period the Sun spends in Simha (Leo); Kanni is the Sun in Kanya; Meenam the Sun in Meena. Twelve months, twelve signs, one-to-one, in order:

A month's first day is fixed by an astronomical event — the sankramam, the Sun's sidereal ingress — with a traditional rule deciding whether the ingress day itself or the next day starts the month (based on the ingress's timing within the day). Month lengths therefore vary between 29 and 32 days with the Sun's true speed. There is no leap-month machinery, no amanta/purnimanta puzzle, none of the lunar calendar's beautiful complications: the Kerala year is the Sun's year, sidereal and clean. (The tithi and the Moon still matter enormously — for vratams and muhurtham — but they ride on top of the solar frame rather than defining it.)
The era count, Kollavarsham (the "Kollam year"), begins its epoch in 825 CE; Malayalam year 1202 spans 2026–27. By modern standard the year begins with Chingam 1 (mid-August); the great spring festival Vishu — Medam 1, the Sun's entry into Mesha — survives as the astronomical new year the whole subcontinent's solar calendars share (Puthandu, Poila Boishakh, Baisakhi are the same ingress in other provinces; Kerala keeps the festival while counting its era from Chingam — historically the northern and southern parts of Kerala themselves differed on which month opened the year, a duality the festival calendar still remembers).
Ask a traditional Malayali their birthday and you may not get a date; you will get a month and a star: "Thulam Thiruvathira", "Chingam Makayiram". The birthday is the day, within that solar month, on which the Moon returns to the natal nakshatra — the pirannal (birth-star day). Because the Moon's 27-star round (~27.3 days) does not divide the ~30.4-day solar month evenly, the star-day drifts against the Gregorian calendar and occasionally occurs twice in one Malayalam month (in which case tradition prescribes which occurrence counts). Temples keep the same clock: a deity's festival is a star in a month — Thiruvonam in Chingam is Onam itself.
Computationally, the star-day is a small, elegant challenge that a date-based calendar app cannot even express: it requires the Moon's sidereal nakshatra by day (a drik computation), intersected with a solar-month window (a sankramam computation) — precisely the two engines a proper Malayalam panchangam page must run. It is also, we note for the matching-minded, the reason Kerala users arrive at a jathakam service already fluent in nakshatras: the star is not an astrological curiosity here; it is how one's grandmother says "birthday".
Kerala's agricultural year runs on a solar-nakshatra clock that deserves to be far better known. Divide the Sun's sidereal year among the 27 nakshatras and each residency — a njattuvela — lasts about 13.6 days. The njattuvelas are Kerala's planting almanac: the most famous, Thiruvathira njattuvela (the Sun in Ardra, monsoon's height, roughly late June into July), is proverbially the time when planted cuttings root — Kerala's gardeners still time pepper vines and jasmine by it. Proverbs assign each njattuvela its rains, its sowing and its risks; the system is a complete folk-phenology calibrated to the sidereal Sun.
For our purposes njattuvela is a gift twice over. It is genuinely useful daily content (today's njattuvela, days remaining, what tradition says of it) that mainstream panchangam sites simply do not carry. And it is computationally free: the Sun's sidereal longitude — which our ephemeris produces to the arc-second — divided into 13°20′ arcs. When our Malayalam panchangam pages launch, njattuvela sits in Layer 1, not a footnote.
Here is Kerala's quiet superlative, and the reason this article belongs in a research series about computational honesty. The almanac arguments still live in other provinces — Tamil Nadu's vākya-vs-thirukanitha, Bengal's Gupta-Press-vs-Bisuddha — turn on one question: when received tables drift from the observable sky, does the almanac follow the ancestors or the sky? Kerala answered in the fifteenth century. Parameshvara of Vatasseri, senior figure of the Kerala school of astronomy and mathematics (the school of Madhava, whose vākya refinements and infinite-series mathematics we profile elsewhere), spent — by his own account — over five decades observing eclipses and comparing them against the received computations. Finding systematic drift, he promulgated the dṛggaṇita ("computation agreeing with the seen") revision of the parameters. The Kerala astronomical mainstream adopted the reform; its almanac tradition has been observation-corrected — in modern terms, drik — ever since.
Sit with the method for a moment, because it is the scientific method, complete: sustained observation, quantified disagreement with the standing model, parameter revision, publication, adoption. Two centuries before the telescope, a Kerala astronomer ran a fifty-year validation campaign against the sky and updated the constants. Our own validation practice — running our engine against established references and publishing every deviation we find — is, we like to think, the same tradition with a better ephemeris. When this series says "drik", it is not importing a Western standard into Indian astrology; it is citing Parameshvara.
The object most Malayali households actually consult is the annual wall calendar — the thin-sheeted, densely annotated calendars of which the newspaper houses' editions (the Manorama and Mathrubhumi calendars being the household names) are the archetypes. A day's cell in such a calendar is a compressed panchangam:

Two things are worth saying plainly, in the spirit of our review series. First, these calendars sit on the province's drik almanac tradition — the timings trace to established Kerala panchangam computation, not to frozen medieval tables; Kerala's calendar wars ended long ago, and its household calendars inherited the peace. Second, the calendars are compressions: they carry endings to the minute for the household essentials and leave the astronomy invisible. That is the correct design for a wall — and it defines what a digital Malayalam panchangam should add: the same day, expandable — endings with their computation shown, the star-day logic made interactive (type your star, see your pirannal dates for the year), njattuvela given its own line, and every number verifiable against the displayed longitudes. Compression for the kitchen wall; transparency one tap deeper. That is the design brief our panchangam project takes from Kerala.
Three practical consequences for horoscope work, each traceable to the structures above. Dates in old records: Kerala documents record births as Kollavarsham month-day (and often star), so a correct converter must compute actual sankramam moments — not fixed month lengths — to recover the Gregorian date; our engine's solar-ingress machinery does exactly this, and the same machinery drives Table 1's boundaries. The star as primary datum: where a Tamil or Hindi-belt record leads with the lagna or the rasi, a Kerala record leads with the nakshatra — which happens to be the single most robust element of a chart against birth-time uncertainty (the Moon's star changes only daily, where the lagna changes two-hourly; see our sensitivity analysis). A tradition that stores the star has, in effect, chosen the error-tolerant checksum. Matching: Kerala's porutham tradition (the ten-point Malayali system our match engine computes alongside the Tamil and northern systems) is star-driven for the same reason — and a Kerala match can proceed from the family's remembered stars alone when full birth times are lost, a mode our tools explicitly support.
Two months show how completely the Kollavarsham frame organises Kerala's year, and both are worth knowing because users arrive at panchangam pages seeking them by name. Karkidakam (Sun in Kataka, the monsoon's drenched final month of the year) is the Ramayana masam: the month of daily Ramayana recitation, of the medicinal karkidaka kanji gruel and the Ayurvedic monsoon regimen, of oil lamps against the rain — the calendar's built-in season of retreat and repair before the year turns. It is traditionally avoided for weddings and beginnings; its value is explicitly restorative. Then the rains break and Chingam opens the new year with Onam in its lap — the season of beginnings the tradition holds back Karkidakam for. A Malayalam panchangam page that merely lists tithis has missed this grain: the month itself is an instruction, and our pages will say so — Karkidakam days flagged with their observance context, Chingam's muhurtham density made visible. Era arithmetic, while we are being practical: Malayalam Era ≈ CE − 825 before Chingam 1 and CE − 824 after it within a Gregorian year (ME 1202 began mid-August 2026); the safe conversion is always via the actual Chingam sankramam, which our engine computes rather than approximates — the difference bites exactly at the August boundary where casual formulas quietly fail.
Because the star-day is Kerala's living connection to the nakshatra system, its edge cases deserve exact statement. The pirannal is the day, in the natal solar month, whose prevailing star (conventionally the star at sunrise) is the natal nakshatra. Because ~27.3 lunar-star days beat against a ~30.4-day solar month, three configurations occur: the star appears once in the month (the normal case); it appears twice (early and again at month's end) — tradition generally honours the occurrence that carries the star at sunrise, with lineages differing on whether the first or the "more complete" occurrence prevails when both qualify, a point on which family custom is the proper authority; or, rarely, a star that brushed the month's edge fails to hold sunrise at all, and the observance follows the lineage's fallback (commonly the adjacent day carrying the star's larger portion). A digital calendar must therefore do more than find the star: it must show the star's span against sunrise so a family can apply its own rule — one more case where transparency, not a silently chosen convention, is the correct engineering. Directly in the star-day culture: because every family member's nakshatra is living knowledge (it is how birthdays are kept), a Kerala match inquiry often begins with two remembered stars long before anyone locates the full horoscopes. The ten-porutham system is built to run on exactly that input, which is why our match engine's star-and-rasi mode exists — it is not a degraded fallback but the Kerala tradition's native entry point, formalised. Full birth-time charts refine the picture (lagna, dasa-sandhi checks, papasamyam); the stars open the door.
Onam is Thiruvonam nakshatra in Chingam month — a star-day, not a date. The Moon's star cycle drifts against the solar month, so the festival wanders mid-August to early September by Gregorian reckoning while being perfectly fixed in its own system.
Because the star-day convention anchors at sunrise while the Moon's actual nakshatra changes whenever its longitude crosses a boundary — frequently mid-night. A birth at 2 AM can thus carry a different nakshatra than "the day's star" printed in the calendar, and careful Kerala records note both. For jathakam purposes the Moon's star at the birth moment is always the governing one — our engine computes it from the actual longitude — while the calendar's sunrise star governs the pirannal observance. Two conventions, two purposes, both correct; confusion arises only when one is substituted for the other.
Kollavarsham 1202 began at Chingam 1 in August 2026 (ME = CE − 824/825 depending on the time of year). Our panchangam pages will always show the running ME date beside the Gregorian.
The Sun's ingress into a rasi is an instant, but a calendar needs whole days — so a rule assigns the month's first day based on when in the day the ingress falls (Kerala convention keys it to the portion of daylight elapsed; its Tamil counterpart uses a related but distinct cutoff). This is why two printed calendars can very occasionally differ by one day on a month's start while agreeing on the astronomy to the second: they inherit different day-rules, not different skies. Our pages compute the ingress instant and then apply the tradition's own stated rule — showing both, in keeping with the transparency this series keeps arguing for.
Both, historically: the era's zero anchors differently than the astronomical year-start, and northern and southern Kerala traditions themselves differed. Medam 1 (Vishu) is the pan-Indian solar new year moment; Chingam 1 opens the modern era count. Kerala, characteristically, kept the festival and the bookkeeping.
Beyond Thiruvathira (the planting queen), the farming proverbs cluster around the monsoon arc — Rohini njattuvela for sowing before the rains, Makayiram at the monsoon's threshold, Punartham and Pooyam through its depths — and around Chothi (Swati) njattuvela, proverbially linked to pearl-making raindrops in the old poems. Structurally near-identical — both are sidereal solar calendars with rasi-months and sankramam day-rules — but they differ in era (Kollavarsham vs the Tamil year cycle), month names, the year-start convention, and the day-assignment rule details when an ingress falls late in the day. The two coasts are calendar cousins: computations transfer, presentations do not — our engine's design assumption throughout.
